High Desert
Midget
Challenge
III The High Desert Midget Challenge III at Hollywood Hills Speedway will be the only time and place in the state of New Mexico that race fans can witness the extreme “open wheel” excitement that championship Midget racing offers. This will be the only total “open wheel” show (Midgets, Sprint Cars and Mini Sprints together) on the 2008 schedule. Midgets are considered the “little brothers” of the popular sprint cars, but don’t let the word little mislead you. These 800 pound three quarter size sprint cars are powered by 4 cylinder Chevrolet, Ford and Mopar engines capable of producing 350 plus horse power. Midgets often rival or best the lap times of the popular sprint cars and their agile nature produces some of the most breathtaking wheel-to-wheel action that money can buy. The High Desert Challenge III is a continuation of one of the biggest shows of the 2007 season. Denver’s Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association and the Arizona Midget Racing Association co-sanction this exciting event that draws cars from as far as California, Texas and Oklahoma. Added to the diverse mix of driving talent, are three local Midget racers, the Rio Rancho father and son team of Robert and Michael Marfia as well as Albuquerque’s Jennifer Greenburg. The final night of the High Desert Midget Challenge will include a fireworks show. Gates open at 5pm for the Friday and Saturday night shows. The action will begin at 7:30 on Friday night and 7pm sharp on Saturday night.

2007 High Desert Challenge,
part 2 at Hollywood Hills
Speedway in New Mexico, produced a great weekend of Midget
racing. On Saturday, RMMRA’s Todd Plemons jumped out to a commanding lead
from fourth starting spot and looked wired in until lap 5, when a valve
spring broke. Then, 15-yr old rookie sensation from Phoenix, Brendan
Higgins, in only his seventh ever Midget feature, won after a 20 lap
battle with Luke Icke of Denver. Both ran fast and clean, exchanging the
lead at least twice before coming up on lapped traffic which was having a
race within the race. Luke got trapped with 3 laps left, bounced off one
of the lapped cars, and Higgins, who was heads-up, drove by for a big win
in his young life and career.
Sunday saw a slightly drier track, still very racy
and smooth even with the non-wing local Sprints as a support class. This
time, Icke jumped out to the strong lead only to give back the margins to
the Burkhart cars following several yellow flags and one red on the first
lap for a double flip involving Bobby Harr and Saturdays winner, Higgins.
Both were OK. Following the final yellow on lap 19, Nathan High seemed to
have the faster set-up
